I just finished playing through some incredible custom campaigns for my favorite games and it got me thinking - what are the most impressive custom campaigns you've experienced? I'm talking about those mods that feel like full expansion packs with professional quality writing, voice acting, and level design. Which games have the best selection of impressive custom campaigns that are worth sinking dozens of hours into?
The most impressive custom campaigns I've played have to be the ones for Half-Life 2. There's this mod called Mission Improbable" that feels like a professional expansion. The level design is incredible and it has full voice acting. For RPGs, the "Enderal" total conversion for Skyrim is basically a whole new game with an amazing story. These impressive custom campaigns show what's possible when modders have both talent and dedication.
I've been playing through some impressive custom campaigns for Starcraft 2 recently. The Arcade has some amazing story-driven campaigns that rival the official ones. Also, the Black Mesa" mod for Half-Life started as a custom campaign and eventually became a commercial release. That's the dream for a lot of modders - creating something so good that it stands on its own.
The Brutal Doom" campaign mods are some of the most impressive custom campaigns I've experienced. They completely change the gameplay while adding new levels and enemies. What's amazing is how they manage to maintain the spirit of the original while making it feel fresh. I've spent more time playing custom Doom campaigns than the original game at this point.
