I've been trying to save money by doing more at home car repairs myself. I'm pretty new to this but I've done oil changes and replaced brake pads. What are some other good beginner friendly repairs I can tackle at home? I'm especially interested in things that really help with mechanic bill savings. I have a basic set of tools for car maintenance but nothing too fancy.
Great question! As a mechanic, I always recommend starting with air filter replacements. They're super easy - usually just a few clips or screws - and shops charge way too much for them. Spark plugs are another good one if you have the right socket. Just make sure you gap them properly. Cabin air filters too - people forget about those but they're simple swaps that really help with mechanic bill savings.
I'd add brake rotor and pad changes to the list. Once you've done pads, rotors aren't much harder. The tools for car maintenance you need are pretty basic - jack, jack stands, lug wrench, and a caliper tool. YouTube is your friend here. I saved over $300 doing my own brakes last month. Just be careful with the brake fluid - don't let air in the system.
I'm not a car expert but I started with replacing my own headlights and taillights. Super simple on most cars - just pop the hood or access panel, twist out the old bulb, put in the new one. Saved me $80 at the shop for what took 10 minutes. Also, wiper blade replacements are stupid easy and shops charge like $40 for something that costs $15 and takes 2 minutes.
Battery replacement is another good one. Most modern cars have the battery right there in the engine bay. Just disconnect negative first, then positive, lift out old battery, put in new one, reconnect positive then negative. Takes 15 minutes max. Auto parts stores will usually install for free but doing it yourself means you learn something and don't have to wait in line.
Don't forget about fluid changes beyond oil. Transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid - all doable at home with basic tools. The key is getting the right fluid for your specific car. Check your owner's manual. I saved about $200 on a transmission fluid change that the dealer wanted $350 for. Just need a drain pan and funnel mostly.
