I'm trying to make a smart purchase and resale value matters to me. Everyone talks about vehicles with best resale value but the lists seem to change every year. What are the actual top performers that consistently hold their value well? I'm looking at both trucks and sedans, maybe even SUVs. Real data from people who've actually sold their cars would be super helpful.
Trucks consistently have the best resale value. Tacomas, Tundras, and full-size pickups from the Big Three all hold value incredibly well. For sedans, Subarus and Hondas tend to retain value better than average. The vehicles with best resale value are usually those with proven reliability reputations. People are willing to pay more for used vehicles they trust won't need major repairs.
I track this professionally. The top 5 for resale value after 5 years are consistently: 1) Toyota Tacoma 2) Jeep Wrangler 3) Toyota 4Runner 4) Porsche 911 5) Toyota Tundra. Trucks and SUVs dominate because they're work vehicles that people keep longer. Sports cars like the 911 are exceptions because they're desireable regardless of age.
What's interesting is that vehicles with best resale value aren't always the most reliable. The Jeep Wrangler holds value incredibly well despite average reliability ratings. It's about desirability and brand perception. People want Wranglers regardless of their issues. Same with some German luxury cars that depreciate heavily initially but then stabilize.
