I just got a sewing machine and I want to try some DIY sewing projects. I know the absolute basics but I'm definitely a beginner. What are some good DIY sewing projects to start with? I'm interested in practical things like simple clothing alterations, maybe some home decor items. I don't want to start with something too complicated that will just frustrate me.
For beginner DIY sewing projects, I recommend starting with pillow covers. They're just rectangles, so the sewing is straight lines, and if you mess up, you can always turn it inside out and try again. Plus you end up with something useful for your home. I made a bunch when I first got my machine and it really helped me get comfortable with the basics.
Tote bags are great beginner DIY sewing projects. They teach you how to make straps, sew corners, and create a lining if you want to get fancy. You can make them from old jeans, canvas, or any sturdy fabric. I started with simple unlined ones, then worked up to lined bags with pockets. They make good gifts too - everyone can use another bag.
If you want to try clothing, pajama pants are probably the easiest DIY sewing project. They're loose fitting so they don't have to be perfect, and you can use fun patterns. The elastic waistband is simpler than it looks. I made my first pair with a free online pattern and they actually fit! It gave me the confidence to try more complicated garments later.
For home decor DIY sewing projects, curtains are surprisingly easy and make a big impact. They're basically just big rectangles with hems on all sides. You can make them any length or width to fit your windows perfectly. I made blackout curtains for my bedroom and it was much cheaper than buying them. The hardest part was dealing with all that fabric on a small sewing table!
