My bathroom needs updating but I don't have the budget for a full renovation. I'm thinking about doing some DIY bathroom projects to improve it gradually. Things like retiling the floor, installing a new vanity, maybe even replacing the tub surround. Has anyone done DIY bathroom projects themselves? How difficult are they really? I'm worried about water damage if I mess something up.
I've done several DIY bathroom projects and the key is taking it one step at a time. Retiling a floor is very doable - just make sure you use the right mortar and grout for wet areas. The hardest part for me was getting the tiles level. A self leveling system helps a lot. Start with a small area like a backsplash before tackling a whole floor to build confidence.
Installing a new vanity is one of the easier DIY bathroom projects. Most come with pretty good instructions. The plumbing part can be tricky if your pipes don't line up perfectly, but flexible supply lines and P traps make it much easier than it used to be. I did mine in a day, including the countertop and faucet. Just make sure you seal everything properly around the edges to prevent water damage.
Replacing a tub surround is definitely a DIY bathroom project you can do yourself, but it requires careful preparation. The most important thing is making sure the wall behind is completely dry and free of mold. Use cement board instead of drywall for the new surround. The actual installation isn't too hard - it's mostly measuring and cutting panels to fit. I used the kind that glues on rather than tiles, which was much easier for a beginner.
For DIY bathroom projects, I'd recommend starting with something simple like replacing the toilet seat or updating the hardware (towel bars, toilet paper holder, etc.). These are cheap, easy, and can make a big visual difference. Then work your way up to more complex projects. The water damage worry is real - always use proper waterproofing materials in wet areas and don't rush the sealing steps. I learned that the hard way with a small leak behind my first vanity install.
