I love making DIY gifts for people but I'm getting tired of the same old things. I've done candles, soap, and simple wood signs. What are some creative DIY crafts that make good gifts? I'm looking for things that don't require super specialized equipment and that people would actually want to receive. Bonus points if they're relatively quick to make since I tend to procrastinate until the last minute.
For DIY gifts, I love making custom cutting boards. They're practical, everyone uses them, and you can make them as simple or fancy as you want. I started with just edge grain maple, then tried some simple patterns with different woods. A food safe finish is important but easy to apply. People are always impressed when you say you made it yourself.
I make personalized coasters as DIY gifts. You can buy plain ceramic tiles from a home improvement store, then use alcohol ink or permanent markers to create designs. Add some felt pads to the bottom and they look really professional. I've done monograms, simple landscapes, even pet portraits. They're quick, cheap, and people love having something unique.
One of my favorite DIY crafts for gifts is making infused oils or vinegars. It's super easy - just get some nice bottles, add herbs or fruits, and fill with good quality oil or vinegar. Let it sit for a few weeks and you have a fancy looking gourmet gift. I like doing garlic rosemary olive oil and strawberry balsamic vinegar. Add a handmade label and it looks store bought.
I've had good luck with making simple leather goods as DIY gifts. A basic leather wallet or keychain doesn't require much equipment - just some leather, a utility knife, hole punch, and thread. There are kits available that include everything you need. It feels more substantial than a lot of other crafts and people appreciate the handmade quality. I made my dad a leather belt last Christmas and he still wears it every day.
