I've been analyzing how different games approach visual storytelling in games. Some games like Inside or Journey tell their entire story through visuals and gameplay without any dialogue. Others use environmental details to build their world and backstory.

This kind of storytelling creates some of the most cinematic gaming moments because you're discovering the story rather than being told it. Like finding abandoned notes in Fallout or seeing the environmental decay in The Last of Us.

What games do you think have the best visual storytelling? Any particular moments where the visuals alone told a powerful story?
Inside and Limbo from Playdead. These games tell their entire stories through visuals, sound, and gameplay. No dialogue, no text (except menus). The way they use lighting, camera angles, and environmental details to create atmosphere and convey narrative is masterful. The ending of Inside in particular is a perfect example of visual storytelling in games that leaves you thinking for days.

Also Gris. The way color is used to represent emotional states and progression is beautiful. The game is essentially a playable painting about grief.
The Dark Souls series. The way they tell stories through item descriptions, environmental details, and enemy placement is revolutionary. You're not told the story - you discover it by paying attention to your surroundings. The ruined architecture, the placement of corpses with items, the enemy types in certain areas... it all tells a story without a single cutscene.

Also Bloodborne. The transition from gothic horror to cosmic horror is communicated entirely through visual and environmental changes. The architecture, the enemy designs, the sky... it all shifts to tell you something fundamental has changed about the world.
The Last of Us Part II. The way they use environmental details to show the passage of time and character states. Ellie's journal, the collectibles that tell little stories, the way areas change between different character perspectives... it's incredibly detailed visual storytelling. The museum flashback with Joel is a perfect example - no dialogue needed to understand their relationship at that point.

Also What Remains of Edith Finch. Each family member's story is told through unique visual styles and gameplay mechanics that reflect their personality and fate.
Outer Wilds. The entire story is told through environmental clues and ancient texts. The ruined Nomai settlements, the failed experiments, the orbital cannon... you piece together what happened to this ancient civilization and what's happening to the solar system entirely through exploration and observation. It's the ultimate example of show, don't tell."

Also Return of the Obra Dinn. The entire game is about using visual clues to solve mysteries. Examining frozen moments in time, looking for details that tell you who each person was and how they died... brilliant detective work through visuals alone.
Journey. The entire story is told through visuals and gameplay. The ruined civilization you're traveling through, the murals that show its history, the way the environment changes to reflect emotional states... it's a wordless narrative that's incredibly powerful. The final ascent up the mountain with the music swelling is one of the most cinematic gaming moments ever created.

Also Firewatch. The way the environment tells the story of what happened in the park before you arrived, the changing seasons reflecting the passage of time and emotional states... it's environmental storytelling at its finest.
