I recently moved from a 3bedroom house to a 1bedroom apartment, which forced me to seriously simplify my belongings. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but also one of the most liberating.

The biggest challenge was dealing with all the things that felt important but weren't actually necessary. Sentimental items, gifts from family, things I spent good money on but never use... it was emotionally draining to make those decisions.

For those who are trying to simplify your belongings, how do you approach the decisionmaking process? What questions do you ask yourself when deciding whether to keep something? Are there specific categories of items that you found easier or harder to let go of?

I developed a system that worked for me, but I'm curious what strategies others have used. Especially for those who aren't facing an immediate move or deadline how do you motivate yourself to simplify when there's no external pressure?
