I keep seeing smart speakers everywhere - Google Home, Amazon Echo, Apple HomePod. But are smart speaker purchases actually useful in daily life? I'm not sure if I'd use voice commands that much, and I'm concerned about privacy. Has anyone integrated smart speakers into their home in a way that actually makes things easier? Or are they mostly just fancy Bluetooth speakers?

I have Google Homes throughout my house and they're surprisingly useful. Smart speaker purchases are worth it for: setting timers while cooking, controlling smart lights, playing music in multiple rooms, and quick weather/news updates. The privacy concern is real though - I have mine in common areas but not bedrooms. They're not essential, but they do make some things more convenient.
Smart speaker purchases become much more worth it when you integrate them with other smart home devices. Being able to say turn off all the lights" or "set the thermostat to 72" without getting up is nice. But if you're just using them as Bluetooth speakers, regular speakers are cheaper and sound better.
I got an Echo Dot for $25 on sale and it's been fun to play with. Smart speaker purchases at that price are easy to justify. I use it for timers, music, and asking random questions. Would I pay $200 for a HomePod? Probably not. Start with a cheap one and see if you actually use it before investing in more.
The privacy aspect is why I don't have any smart speakers. I know you can mute them, but it still feels invasive. For me, smart speaker purchases aren't worth the trade-off. I use my phone for voice commands when needed, and regular speakers for music.
