After getting stranded on the highway last month, I realized I need a better emergency kit. I had jumper cables and a flashlight, but that was about it.

What should everyone have in their car maintenance emergency kit? I'm thinking basics like jumper cables, tire inflator, basic tools, but what else? What about things for different seasons or climates?

Also, how often should you check and refresh your emergency kit? Do things like batteries and flares expire?
For a car maintenance emergency kit, I recommend: jumper cables or jump starter, tire inflator/sealant, basic tool set, flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, warning triangles/flares, blanket, water, non-perishable snacks, phone charger, duct tape, and gloves. Check everything every 6 months and replace expired items. Season-specific items too - ice scraper in winter, etc.
After getting a flat on the highway, I added a portable air compressor and tire plug kit to my car maintenance emergency kit. Also, a multi-tool and some zip ties can fix temporary issues. I check my kit every season change - swap out summer/winter items and check battery dates. Flares and first aid supplies do expire, so mark dates on them.
My car maintenance emergency kit includes: reflective vest, fire extinguisher (small automotive type), window breaker/seatbelt cutter tool, and emergency cash. The vest makes you visible if you're working on the side of the road. The window breaker is for water emergencies. I practice with my family on how to use everything - having tools isn't helpful if you don't know how to use them.
Don't forget about comfort items for your car maintenance emergency kit. If you're stranded for hours, having a book, snacks, water, and a blanket makes a big difference. I also keep a list of emergency contacts and insurance information in the kit. A portable phone charger is essential - your phone is your lifeline in an emergency.
