My kitchen and bathroom cabinets are structurally sound but the hardware looks really dated. I'm looking for budget-friendly hardware upgrades that can give them a fresh look without replacing the cabinets themselves. What are the best places to find affordable knobs and pulls? Also, any tips for updating hinges or other hardware that might show? I'd love to hear about your experiences with simple hardware upgrades that made a big difference in your home's appearance.
Amazon and eBay are great for budget-friendly hardware upgrades. I found modern cabinet pulls for about $1 each when buying in bulk. Just make sure to check the reviews and measurements carefully. I ordered samples first to make sure I liked the finish and size. Saved me hundreds compared to buying from a hardware store.
I spray painted my existing hardware. It sounds crazy but it works! I had dated brass knobs and I cleaned them thoroughly, then used metal spray paint in a matte black finish. They look brand new and it cost me about $10 for the paint. Just make sure to use several light coats and let them cure completely before reinstalling.
Check out Habitat for Humanity ReStores if you have one nearby. They often have bags of mixed hardware for super cheap. I got a bag of 50 various knobs and pulls for $10. Some needed cleaning but most were in great condition. It's a mix-and-match approach but you can find some really unique pieces.
For hinges that show, you can often just clean them really well if they're in good condition. A soak in vinegar or a commercial cleaner can remove years of grime. If they're really dated, consider painting them to match your new hardware. Just make sure to use paint that won't chip with use and allows the hinge to move properly.
IKEA has really affordable hardware if you have one nearby. Their selection is modern and the prices are hard to beat. I got all new pulls for my kitchen for about $2 each. They have a good range of styles and finishes. Just be aware that some IKEA hardware uses metric measurements, so make sure it will fit your existing holes.
