I've been trying to establish a consistent home workout routine that actually fits into my busy work schedule. I work from home most days and find it hard to motivate myself to exercise when I'm already in the house all day.
What kind of home workout routine has worked best for you guys? I'm looking for something that's effective but doesn't require hours of my time. I've tried a few different approaches but nothing seems to stick long term.
I'm particularly interested in routines that combine strength and cardio, and maybe some flexibility work too. How do you structure your week? Do you do full body workouts every time or split it up?
I totally get the struggle with busy schedules. What's worked for me is keeping it super simple - 30 minutes max, 4-5 days a week. I do a circuit style home workout routine that combines strength and cardio.
My go-to is 3 rounds of: push-ups, squats, mountain climbers, planks, and jumping jacks. Each exercise for 45 seconds with 15 seconds rest. It's intense but efficient. The key for me was finding a time that works consistently - for me it's right after work before I start making dinner.
What time of day have you tried working out? Sometimes that makes a big difference in sticking with it.
I work from home too and found that breaking up my workouts throughout the day helps a lot. Instead of one long session, I do 10-15 minute mini workouts. Like 10 minutes in the morning, 10 at lunch, 10 in the evening.
For my home exercise routine, I use different apps for different times of day. Morning might be yoga/stretching, lunch is bodyweight strength, evening is cardio. This approach keeps me from feeling like I'm spending hours working out but still adds up to effective home workouts.
Have you tried any home workout apps? Some of them have really good short workout options.
As someone who works with busy professionals, I recommend focusing on consistency over duration. Even 20 minutes of focused exercise 3-4 times a week can yield great results if you're consistent.
For a home workout plan that fits busy schedules, I suggest full body workouts 3 times a week. That way you're hitting everything without needing daily sessions. The other days can be active recovery - walking, stretching, light mobility work.
What are your main fitness goals? That might help determine the best structure for your routine.
I struggled with this too until I started time blocking my workouts. I literally schedule them in my calendar like meetings. 30 minutes, 4 days a week - Monday, Wednesday, Friday strength, Tuesday cardio.
For the home workout routine itself, I keep a notebook by my workout space with my plan for the week. That way I don't waste time figuring out what to do. I rotate through different circuits but having it written down saves mental energy.
Also, I found that working out first thing in the morning works best for me. If I wait until later, other things always come up. What's your current schedule look like?
Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone. I've tried morning workouts but always feel stiff and unmotivated. Maybe I need to try the mini workout approach throughout the day.
My main goals are building some muscle (especially upper body) and improving my endurance. I sit at a desk all day so I also want to work on posture and flexibility.
Based on what you've all shared, I'm thinking of trying: 3 full body strength days (Mon/Wed/Fri) and 2 cardio days (Tue/Thu) with weekends for active recovery. Starting with 25-30 minute sessions.
The calendar blocking idea is genius - I'm definitely going to try that. And keeping a notebook by my workout space makes so much sense.
