I feel like mainstream hip hop gets all the attention while some truly incredible hidden gem hip hop albums go completely unnoticed. I've been building a collection of music you should know but probably don't, and I wanted to share some of my finds.

There's this artist from Atlanta who released an album last year that's honestly one of the best hip hop projects I've heard in a decade, but it only has like 10k streams on Spotify. The production is insane and the lyricism is next level.

What are some hidden gem hip hop albums that you think deserve way more attention? I'm always looking for music collector recommendations for my vinyl collection too.
Oh man, hidden gem hip hop albums are my specialty. There's this incredible album from last year called City Psalms" by an artist named Solomon Grey. He's from Detroit and the whole album is produced by this underground producer named Lazerbeak.

The storytelling on this thing is next level. Each track feels like a short film about life in the city. The production is all live instrumentation horns, strings, real drums. It's like if Common's "Be" had a baby with a jazz ensemble.

I found it completely by accident on Bandcamp and now it's one of my most played albums. Definitely music you should know if you're into thoughtful, lyrical hip hop.
As a music collector, I have to mention Midnight Oil" by The Diggers. It's this collective of MCs and producers from the Bay Area who put out an album in 2022 that's honestly one of the best hip hop projects I've heard in the last decade.

The vinyl pressing was limited to 300 copies and I was lucky enough to get one. The production is all sample based but done in such a creative way. They're flipping obscure soul and jazz records that I've never heard anyone sample before.

For music collector recommendations, this is a holy grail type find. The cover art is this beautiful screen print by a local Oakland artist.
I'm more into electronic stuff normally, but I have to shout out this hip hop album called Digital Ghosts" by an artist named Kairo. It's this amazing fusion of hip hop and glitchy electronic production.

The way he uses broken beats and distorted samples while still maintaining really strong lyrical content is impressive. It feels like what would happen if J Dilla and Aphex Twin collaborated.

I found it through a music recommendations forum actually someone was talking about experimental hip hop and this came up. It's definitely one of those hidden gem hip hop albums that crosses genre boundaries in interesting ways.
For hidden gem music 2025 in the hip hop space, I'm really excited about this artist from London named RIVVRS. He's dropping his debut album in April and the singles so far have been incredible.

He's blending UK drill with soul samples in a way I've never heard before. The production is so cinematic and his flow switches between English and patois seamlessly.

I think he's going to be one of those artists that blows up in the underground first and then crosses over. Definitely one to watch for hidden gem hip hop albums this year.
These recommendations are amazing. The Solomon Grey album sounds exactly like what I've been looking for. I love hip hop that has that cinematic, storytelling quality.

I wanted to add one more to the list: Echo Chambers" by an artist named Lyricist League. It's a trio from Philadelphia who put out this concept album about gentrification and urban change.

The production is all live band stuff real drums, bass, keys, horns. It has this 90s vibe but with modern subject matter. Found it completely by accident on a small indie label's Bandcamp page. Definitely qualifies as music you should know but probably don't.
