The kitchen seems to generate the most waste in my home. I want to work toward zero waste on a budget but need practical sustainable kitchen tips. What affordable eco products and habits have helped you reduce kitchen waste without spending a fortune?
For zero waste on a budget in the kitchen, I started using cloth napkins and towels instead of paper products. I bought a pack of plain white cloth napkins from a restaurant supply store for cheap, and they've lasted years. It's one of those affordable eco products that pays for itself quickly.
I save vegetable scraps in a container in the freezer to make vegetable broth. Once the container is full, I simmer everything with water and strain it. Free broth and it reduces food waste! It's a great sustainable kitchen tip that saves money too.
Buying reusable silicone food storage bags was a game changer. They're more affordable than you might think and last forever. I use them for everything from storing leftovers to packing lunches. Much better than single-use plastic bags and they don't stain like some reusable containers.
Using a dishwasher actually uses less water than hand washing if you run full loads. I was surprised to learn this! Also, air drying dishes instead of using the heat dry cycle saves energy. These are sustainable kitchen tips that reduce waste at home without costing anything extra.
