After mentoring several beginners over the years, I've noticed certain patterns in the mistakes people make when starting game development. I think discussing game development common mistakes can save newcomers a lot of time and frustration.

Some obvious ones include scope creep and trying to make their dream game as their first project. But what are some less obvious game development common mistakes that beginners should watch out for?

I'm also interested in game development project planning mistakes. How detailed should planning be for a first project? I've seen beginners spend months planning only to realize their plan was unrealistic.

And what about game development skill building mistakes? Are there specific skills that beginners often neglect that they should focus on earlier?
