Some of my strongest childhood memories involve playing video games with friends and family. I'd love to hear about everyone's favorite retro gaming memories. For me, it's staying up late with my cousin trying to beat Sonic 2 on the Sega Genesis - we must have spent weeks on that game! Those Sega Genesis memories are some of the best from my childhood. What gaming moments from the past still bring a smile to your face?
Christmas morning 1989, getting an NES with Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt. My brother and I played for hours while our parents tried to get us to open other presents. That feeling of blowing into the cartridge when it wouldn't work, the distinctive click of the cartridge slot - pure NES nostalgia. We didn't even have a light gun for Duck Hunt, just used our fingers on the screen!
Renting games from Blockbuster every Friday with my allowance. The excitement of picking a game based solely on the box art, then having the whole weekend to try to beat it. Some of my favorite 90s video games discoveries happened that way - games I never would have bought but ended up loving. The pressure to finish before Monday was real!
Playing Street Fighter 2 at the arcade with a line of quarters on the machine. The sounds, the crowds, the intensity - nothing compares. I spent so much allowance money trying to beat the local champions. When I finally got a SNES and could play at home, it was magical but different. Those arcade memories are some of my strongest retro gaming memories.
Getting Nintendo Power magazine in the mail and studying every page. The maps, the tips, the previews of upcoming games. I'd read them cover to cover multiple times. The excitement of seeing a game you were playing featured, or discovering a secret you hadn't found yet. That was our internet before the internet.
