Games that surpassed expectations are my favorite kind. You go in thinking you know what you're getting, and the game just keeps delivering more and better than you imagined.
"Ocean's Echo" did this for me. It's a deep-sea exploration game that I thought would be pretty but shallow. Instead, I found this incredibly detailed ecosystem simulation with emergent storytelling and meaningful choices about conservation vs exploitation. The way your actions affect the underwater world is so well done. It's definitely one of those games that surpassed expectations in every way.
