I love discussing games that turned out to be games better than expected. Sometimes you go in with certain assumptions and the game just blows them all away.
My recent favorite is "Skybound" - it's a sailing exploration game that I thought would be relaxing but shallow. Instead, I found this incredibly deep survival and discovery experience with dynamic weather systems that actually affect gameplay meaningfully. The way the wind mechanics work with the sailing is just... chef's kiss. It's one of those games that surpassed expectations in every department.
What games have been better than expected for you? I'm especially interested in ones that looked average but turned out amazing.
