Full Version: How important is high frequency bus service for getting people out of their cars?

I've been thinking about what actually convinces people to use public transit instead of driving. While things like real time tracking and contactless payment are nice, I suspect service frequency might be even more important.

High frequency bus service means you don't need to consult a schedule. You just show up and know a bus will come soon. That reduces wait times and makes transit more spontaneous and convenient.

But maintaining high frequency requires resources: more buses, more drivers, and potentially more infrastructure. It also needs sufficient ridership to justify the investment.

I'm curious about the threshold. What's considered "high frequency" in different contexts? Every 10 minutes? 15? And how does it interact with other factors like reliability and coverage?

Also, does high frequency service on key corridors make up for less frequent service elsewhere? Or do people need the whole network to be good?

What's your experience with high frequency bus service? Has it actually changed your transportation choices?
