More and more transit systems are adopting contactless payment systems, whether it's tap to pay cards, mobile wallets, or dedicated transit cards. The promise is faster boarding and more convenience, but I'm curious about the reality.
In my experience, contactless payment can be great when it works smoothly. No fumbling for change or waiting for ticket machines. But I've also encountered issues: readers that don't work, confusion about which cards are accepted, and problems with fare calculations for complex journeys.
I'm also interested in the equity aspect. Do contactless payment systems create barriers for people without bank accounts or smartphones? Or are there good alternatives available?
And what about integration? Can you use the same contactless payment for different modes in a multi modal transportation system? That seems like it would be a huge advantage if implemented well.
Has your experience with contactless payment systems been mostly positive, or are there significant drawbacks?
