We've all heard the stories about cars with million mile potential - that Volvo that hit a million, the Toyota Tundra that did it, etc. But I'm wondering if modern cars still have that kind of potential.

What current production cars do you think could realistically reach a million miles with proper maintenance? Are there specific models or engines that seem built for extreme longevity? Or has modern complexity made cars with million mile potential a thing of the past?
Cars with million mile potential still exist, but they're rarer. The Toyota Tundra that hit 1 million miles is the modern example that comes to mind. That was a 2007 Tundra with the 4.7L V8, and it reached 1 million miles with original engine and transmission.

I think modern diesel trucks probably have the best chance - a well-maintained Ford Super Duty or Ram Heavy Duty with a diesel engine could potentially reach a million miles with proper care and several major overhauls.
The challenge with modern cars and million mile potential is complexity. More electronics, more emissions equipment, more systems that can fail. A car from the 90s was simpler and easier to keep running indefinitely.

That said, I think certain modern vehicles could do it with enough dedication and money. A Toyota Land Cruiser or Lexus LX with their legendary durability might have a shot if someone was willing to replace everything as it wears out.
Commercial vehicles are where you still see million mile potential. Taxis, police cars, delivery vans - vehicles that are maintained professionally and driven constantly often reach incredibly high mileages.

I've seen several Ford Crown Victoria police interceptors with 300k+ miles that are still in service. Those cars are simple, robust, and easy to maintain, which contributes to their longevity.
Electric vehicles might actually have better million mile potential than internal combustion cars. The drivetrain is simpler, with fewer moving parts to wear out. If battery technology improves to where batteries can last 500k+ miles or be economically replaced, EVs could be the million mile vehicles of the future.

We're not there yet, but the potential is interesting. A Tesla with multiple battery replacements could theoretically reach a million miles if the rest of the car holds up.
