We're starting a community garden and I want to plan regular community garden events that bring people together. What types of community garden events have you found most successful? I'm interested in both workfocused community garden events and more social community garden events.
Community garden events work best when they combine work with celebration. We do work and harvest" days where people help in the garden, then share a meal made from what we've grown. Community garden events should connect the labor with the rewards.
We've found that community garden events should include learning components. Composting workshops," "seed saving sessions," "pollinator garden tours." Community garden events become more valuable when people gain knowledge they can use at home too.
Our most popular community garden events are the seasonal celebrations - spring planting festival, summer solstice picnic, fall harvest feast. Community garden events anchored to natural cycles feel meaningful and give people reasons to return throughout the year.
