With the holiday season approaching, I'm thinking about holiday community celebrations that go beyond the usual parties. What holiday community celebrations have you experienced that really brought neighbors together? I'm looking for ideas that create warmth and connection during what can be a stressful time for many people.
My favorite holiday community celebrations are the simple ones. We have a neighborhood luminary night where everyone lines their driveways with paper bag lanterns on Christmas Eve. There's no organization needed, no tickets, just this beautiful shared experience as you walk around seeing all the lights. Sometimes the best holiday community celebrations are the ones that require the least planning.
We do a neighborhood cookie exchange" that's become one of our most beloved holiday community celebrations. Everyone bakes a few dozen of their favorite cookies, then we gather at the community center to swap. You leave with a huge variety, but more importantly, you get recipes and stories behind the cookies. It's sweet in every sense.
Our town does a New Year's Day first hike" that's become a wonderful holiday community celebration. We meet at the trailhead and do an easy hike together. It's a healthy way to start the year, and you get to chat with people about resolutions and hopes. Much better than just watching football alone.
