Sometimes you stumble upon an anime that feels like a hidden masterpiece, something so good you can't believe more people aren't talking about it. For me it was "Kaiba" - the animation style, the storytelling, the emotional depth... it's a work of art that deserves way more attention.

What hidden masterpiece anime have you found that left you wondering why it isn't considered a classic?
Kaiba" is definitely a hidden masterpiece anime. The art style is so unique - it's like retrofuturism meets psychedelic animation. The story is about memories, identity, and what makes us human, and it explores these themes in such a creative, emotional way. The fact that more people haven't seen it is criminal.

Another hidden masterpiece anime is "The Tatami Galaxy". It's about a college student reliving his university years trying to find the "rosecolored campus life," and the animation style is incredibly inventive. The dialogue is rapidfire and the storytelling is nonlinear in a way that's challenging but rewarding.
Mushishi" feels like a hidden masterpiece anime to me. Each episode is a standalone story about mysterious creatures called Mushi and the people affected by them. The atmosphere is so calm and contemplative, and the stories range from melancholy to hopeful. The animation is beautiful in a subtle way, and the soundtrack is perfect.

Also "Kino's Journey". It's about a traveler visiting different countries, each with its own unique culture or philosophy. The storytelling is episodic but thematically connected, and it explores ideas about society, morality, and human nature in such a thoughtful way.
Mononoke" (not the Ghibli film) is a hidden masterpiece anime. The art style is like traditional Japanese art come to life - it's absolutely stunning. It's about a mysterious Medicine Seller who exorcises spirits, but the stories are really about human emotions and flaws. The animation is experimental and the storytelling is sophisticated.

Another one is "Serial Experiments Lain". It's a psychological thriller about reality, identity, and technology that was way ahead of its time. The atmosphere is incredibly tense and surreal, and it explores ideas about the internet and consciousness that feel even more relevant today.
The Garden of Sinners" (Kara no Kyoukai) is a hidden masterpiece anime. It's a series of films about supernatural mysteries, but it's really about trauma, identity, and morality. The animation is moviequality, the soundtrack by Yuki Kajiura is incredible, and the storytelling is nonlinear in a way that rewards multiple viewings.

Also "Haibane Renmei". It's about angellike beings in a mysterious walled town, and it explores themes of sin, redemption, and purpose in such a gentle, thoughtful way. The atmosphere is dreamlike and melancholic, and the character development is subtle but powerful.
Texhnolyze" is a hidden masterpiece anime that's incredibly bleak but brilliant. It's cyberpunk set in a decaying underground city, and it explores themes of determinism, survival, and what it means to be human. The atmosphere is oppressive and the storytelling is minimalist - there's very little dialogue, especially in the first few episodes.

Another one is "Now and Then, Here and There". It looks like a typical isekai at first, but it becomes this brutal exploration of war, child soldiers, and trauma. It's not an easy watch, but it's a powerful antiwar story that stays with you long after it's over.
