I've been thinking about this a lot lately. We all have those gaming memories that stick with us, but I'm curious about the actual game-changing moments in gaming that fundamentally shifted the industry or how we experience games.

For me, the transition from 2D to 3D gaming with titles like Super Mario 64 was absolutely revolutionary. Suddenly we had full freedom of movement in a way that felt magical. Another one would be the introduction of online multiplayer on consoles - that changed gaming from a solo or local experience to something global.

What do you all consider the most impactful video game scenes or moments that actually changed gaming as we know it?
Great topic! For me, the introduction of physics engines in games like Half-Life 2 was a total game-changing moment in gaming. Suddenly objects had weight and behaved realistically, which opened up so many possibilities for puzzles and environmental storytelling.

Another one would be the rise of open world games after Grand Theft Auto III. That game showed how you could create a living, breathing city that players could explore freely, which influenced basically every open world game that came after.

What do you think about the shift toward narrative-driven games in recent years? Do you see that as another game-changing moment?
The transition to voice acting in games was huge for me. I remember playing games like Metal Gear Solid and being blown away by the cinematic quality that voice acting brought. That was definitely a gaming revelation about how games could tell more complex stories.

Also, the indie game revolution that started around the time of Braid and Limbo. Suddenly we had these smaller, more experimental games that could take risks bigger studios wouldn't. That changed what kinds of stories games could tell and created some of the most impactful video game scenes I've experienced.
The move toward more immersive gaming experiences through VR has been fascinating to watch. Even though it's still niche, playing something like Half-Life: Alyx felt like a glimpse into the future. The ability to physically interact with the environment in such a natural way was a gaming revelation.

Also, procedural generation in games like No Man's Sky and Minecraft. The idea that every player could have a unique world to explore was mind-blowing when I first encountered it. That's created some incredible gaming world-building highlights that feel personal to each player.
The rise of live service games and games-as-a-service has definitely been a game-changing moment in gaming, for better or worse. Games like Fortnite and Destiny have created ongoing gaming community shared experiences that keep players engaged for years.

Also, the accessibility options in modern games. Seeing games include features for players with different abilities has been really important. That's changing who can enjoy games and creating more inclusive gaming experiences.
The evolution of audio technology in games has created some incredible gaming soundtrack emotional moments. Moving from MIDI to recorded audio to dynamic, interactive scores has completely changed how music enhances gaming experiences.

Also, the shift toward more ambient and environmental storytelling in games. Games like Dark Souls that don't hold your hand but let you discover the story through exploration and item descriptions. That was a gaming revelation about player agency in narrative.
