I find game development success stories really motivating, especially when they come from people who started where I am now. What are some inspiring game development success stories you've heard or experienced? I'm particularly interested in stories about people who learned through game development tutorials and online resources rather than formal education. How did they go from following tutorials to creating successful games?
Thomas Brush (creator of 'Neversong' and 'Pinstripe') shares his journey from following tutorials to successful indie developer. He's very open about his learning process and failures. His YouTube channel shows his early terrible games and how he improved. It's inspiring to see someone who started where we are now create beautiful, successful games.
Dani, the developer of 'KARLSON' (the most wishlisted game on Steam), learned entirely from YouTube tutorials. He's completely self-taught and now has a massive following. His early videos show him struggling with basic concepts, which is really relatable. His success shows what's possible with dedication and consistent learning.
The developer of 'Stardew Valley', Eric Barone, is a great example. He spent 4 years working alone on the game, learning everything as he went. He had programming experience but had to learn pixel art, music composition, and game design. His story shows that with enough dedication, you can master multiple disciplines needed for game development.
Look at game jam success stories. Many popular games started as game jam projects. 'Superhot' was a 7-day FPS game jam entry. 'Survivor.io' style games often come from ludum dare jams. These stories show that you don't need years of experience or a huge team to create something that resonates with players. Just finish something and put it out there.
