I work with a lot of people who are joining professional communities for the first time, and I'm always looking for good introduction templates for new members. What formats have worked well for you? I'm interested in both online community introductions and in-person group settings.
For introduction templates, I recommend this simple structure: 1) Greeting and your name, 2) What brought you to the community, 3) One relevant experience or interest, 4) What you hope to contribute, 5) A question for the community. This covers the basics without being overwhelming. For online communities, you can add links to your work if relevant.
As a new member myself, I appreciate when communities have a specific introductions" thread or channel. It takes the pressure off because everyone there is doing the same thing. Some of the best templates I've seen include prompts like "What's one thing you're currently learning?" or "What brought you here today?"
In the communities I manage, we use a template that includes: Name, Role/Background, What you hope to learn, What you can offer, and Fun fact. The fun fact is surprisingly effective for breaking the ice and making introductions more memorable. It gives people something personal to connect with beyond just professional details.
For professional communities, I think it's important to include both your current focus and your goals. Something like Currently working on X, looking to improve Y, and hoping to connect with others interested in Z." This gives people multiple points of connection and makes it easier for them to reach out with relevant conversations.
