We're launching our first affiliate marketing program next quarter and I want to make sure we get it right from the start. We're a SaaS company with about $2M ARR.
What commission structures have you found most effective for affiliate marketing programs? I'm torn between flat rates and percentage-based commissions.
Also, how do you recruit quality affiliates rather than just anyone with a website? I want partners who will actually promote our product effectively, not just add it to a massive list of products.
For affiliate marketing programs in SaaS, we've found that tiered commission structures work best. Instead of a flat rate, affiliates earn higher percentages as they drive more sales.
Our structure looks like: 20% for first 10 sales, 25% for 11-50 sales, 30% for 51+ sales. This incentivizes affiliates to keep promoting rather than just making a few sales and moving on.
For recruiting quality affiliates: we're very selective. We look for affiliates with engaged audiences in our niche, not just large follower counts. We review their content quality, audience engagement, and alignment with our brand values before approving them.
We also provide extensive resources - swipe copy, banners, email templates, case studies - to make it easy for them to promote effectively.
We structure our affiliate marketing programs around recurring commissions rather than one-time payments. Since we're a SaaS company, it makes sense to reward affiliates for the lifetime value of customers they refer.
Our affiliates earn 30% of the first year's subscription value, then 10% in perpetuity as long as the customer stays subscribed. This aligns their incentives with ours - we both want long-term customers.
For recruiting quality affiliates: we use our SEO for customer acquisition skills to attract affiliates organically. We create content about how to make money as an affiliate" and "best affiliate programs for X niche," which brings in affiliates who are already interested and motivated.
We use marketing automation tools to manage our affiliate marketing programs efficiently. When an affiliate signs up, they automatically get access to a resource portal with all the materials they need.
The automation also handles commission tracking and payment reminders. Affiliates get monthly performance reports showing how much they've earned and tips for improving their results.
For commission structures: we offer different rates for different types of promotions. Content affiliates (bloggers, YouTubers) get 25%, while coupon/deal sites get 15%. This reflects the different customer values - content affiliates tend to bring in higher-quality, longer-term customers.
For our outbound marketing efforts, we sometimes partner with affiliates who can help us reach specific target accounts. We structure these affiliate marketing programs differently than our general program.
For these strategic affiliates, we offer higher commissions (40-50%) but have stricter requirements. They need to have direct access to decision makers at our target companies and agree to specific outreach methods.
We also provide these affiliates with personalized outreach templates and talking points tailored to each target account. It's more work to set up, but the conversion rates are much higher than with our general affiliate program.
We actually combine affiliate marketing programs with our referral marketing systems. Top referrers can apply to become official affiliates and earn commissions on all the customers they refer, not just the first one.
This creates a progression path: start as a regular referrer, become a top referrer, then get invited to the affiliate program with higher earning potential.
The commission structure for these hybrid affiliates is different - they get a lower percentage but on all sales from customers they refer, not just new customers. So if they refer a company that expands to 10 seats over time, they earn commissions on all those seats.
This has been really effective for turning happy customers into ongoing promoters.
