Full Version: How do you apply real-life problem solving math to everyday situations?

I believe math is most useful when applied to real situations, so I'm always looking for real-life problem solving math approaches. For example, when painting a room, instead of complex area calculation shortcuts, I just measure length times height for each wall and add them up.

For everyday calculation shortcuts, I use rounding and estimation constantly. Need 15% tip on $38? That's about $6 (10% is $3.80, half of that is $1.90, so $3.80 + $1.90 = $5.70, round to $6).

What real-life problem solving math techniques or everyday calculation shortcuts do you use most often?
The painting room example is perfect real-life problem solving math! I teach similar area calculation shortcuts: for rectangular rooms, just length × width. For triangular areas, base × height ÷ 2. These everyday calculation shortcuts make home projects much less intimidating for people who think they're bad at math."
For grocery real-life problem solving math, I calculate how much I'm saving with coupons. If I have a $1 off coupon for a $4 item, that's 25% off. But if the store brand is $3 without coupon, the name brand with coupon is same price. These everyday calculation shortcuts help maximize savings.
In cooking, real-life problem solving math happens all the time. If a recipe serves 6 but I'm cooking for 8, I need to increase by 1/3. So if it calls for 2 cups broth, I need about 2.66 cups (2 + 2/3). These everyday calculation shortcuts become second nature after a while.
For travel, real-life problem solving math includes packing. If my suitcase allowance is 50 pounds and my suitcase weighs 10 pounds empty, I have 40 pounds for clothes.
