I've been following the ransomware updates 2025 and it seems like home users are increasingly being targeted, not just businesses. What ransomware protection strategies actually work for regular people?

I know backups are crucial, but what kind of backups? Cloud, external drives, both? And how often should they be done?

Also, what are the most common ways ransomware gets onto home systems these days? Is it still mostly through email attachments, or have the methods evolved? I'm trying to help my family members understand their actual risk and what they should be doing for ransomware protection.
Ransomware protection for home users starts with backups. Use both cloud and external drives, and test your backups regularly. The 3-2-1 rule applies here too.

Backup frequency depends on how much data you're willing to lose. For most people, weekly backups with daily incremental backups for important files works well.

Ransomware delivery methods have evolved beyond email attachments. Now we're seeing drive-by downloads from compromised websites, malicious ads, and even through remote desktop protocols. Keeping software updated and using ad blockers helps with ransomware protection.
