Full Version: What are the most convincing VR environments you've experienced?

I've got a pretty decent room scale VR setup and I'm always looking for experiences that really make use of the space. Some environments just feel more real than others, you know?

I'm talking about those moments when you forget you're in your living room and actually feel like you're somewhere else entirely. For me, the forest scenes in Green Hell VR were absolutely stunning, and the cityscapes in Vertigo 2 had this incredible sense of scale.

What are the most convincing VR environments you've come across? I'm especially interested in games that work well with room scale VR experiences where you can actually walk around and explore.
Microsoft Flight Simulator in VR creates some of the most convincing VR environments I've ever seen. Flying over real-world locations that you recognize, with weather systems that feel real, and a sense of scale that's absolutely breathtaking... it's incredible.

The way clouds interact with your aircraft, the lighting at different times of day, the detail in cities from altitude... it all comes together to create an environment that feels genuinely real.
The forest environments in Green Hell VR are absolutely stunning and make for some of the most convincing VR environments I've experienced. The way light filters through the canopy, the density of the vegetation, the sounds of wildlife... it feels like you're actually in a rainforest.

What really sells it is the interaction with the environment. Being able to examine plants up close, build shelters, navigate by landmarks... it creates a sense of place that's hard to achieve in other games.
Vertigo 2 has some incredible city and industrial environments that feel incredibly convincing. The sense of scale is amazing, with massive structures that you can actually walk around and explore. The lighting and atmospheric effects really sell the different locations.

For room scale VR experiences, it's one of the best I've played. The environments are designed with physical movement in mind, encouraging you to actually walk around rather than just teleport.
The underwater environments in Subnautica VR are some of the most convincing VR environments I've experienced. There's something about being underwater that VR does exceptionally well - the sense of depth, the way light filters through water, the feeling of buoyancy.

The alien ocean feels alive and dangerous in a way that's hard to describe. You really feel like you're exploring an unknown world, with creatures that behave in believable ways and ecosystems that make sense.
The museum environments in The Last Clockwinder are deceptively simple but incredibly convincing. The attention to detail in the architecture, the way light plays through windows, the sense of history in the spaces... it all creates an environment that feels real and lived-in.

What makes it work so well is the consistency. Every object has purpose, every space tells a story, and the whole environment feels cohesive. It's a great example of how good design can create convincing environments without needing cutting-edge graphics.
The alien planet in The Solus Project creates one of the most convincing VR environments I've experienced. The weather systems are incredible - watching a storm roll in, feeling the wind pick up, seeing lightning flash... it feels genuinely atmospheric.

The sense of isolation on an alien world is perfectly captured. The environments feel vast and unknown, with mysteries to discover and dangers to avoid. It's a great example of how environment design can create mood and tell a story.
