I have a friend who's trying to get into retro gaming but keeps getting frustrated with the difficulty and lack of modern conveniences. He's used to checkpoints, tutorials, and forgiving gameplay, so some of these old school video games are really kicking his butt.
I've been trying to give him some old school gaming tips to help him adjust. Things like being patient, learning patterns, and accepting that you're going to die a lot. But I'm curious what other advice people have.
What are your best old school gaming tips for someone who's new to retro games? How do you help them appreciate the challenge without getting discouraged? I'm looking for practical advice that can help bridge the gap between modern and classic gaming sensibilities.
