Trying to make sure my boat's lighting meets all marine lighting requirements. What are the actual legal marine lighting requirements for different types of boats and situations? I want to be compliant but also practical. Are there specific marine lighting requirements for navigation lights, anchor lights, and interior lighting that I should be aware of? Any recommendations for good marine lighting that meets requirements?
Marine lighting requirements vary by boat size and type. Basic marine lighting requirements: red/green bow lights visible 1 mile, white stern light visible 2 miles, 360-degree white anchor light. For marine lighting requirements compliance, LED is best - lower power draw, brighter. Make sure your marine lighting meets Coast Guard requirements for your boat length. Also consider interior marine lighting that doesn't kill night vision.
Important marine lighting requirements often missed: all-around white light when anchored (not just stern light), proper placement height for visibility, backup bulbs or spare lights. Marine lighting requirements also include having working navigation lights before sunset - not turning them on when it gets dark. Check your marine lighting regularly as part of pre-departure checklist.
