Just got into sailing and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the gear options. What essential sailing gear should I prioritize as a beginner? I'm looking for both safety equipment and practical items that will make sailing more enjoyable. Also, any tips on where to find quality essential sailing gear without breaking the bank would be appreciated!
For essential sailing gear, start with proper foul weather gear. Don't buy cheap stuff - it won't keep you dry. Good deck shoes with non-marking soles are essential sailing gear. Also, sailing gloves - your hands will thank you. A comfortable life jacket you'll actually wear is crucial. And don't forget a good knife with marlinspike - real essential sailing gear that gets used constantly.
Safety-focused essential sailing gear: harness and tether for offshore work, proper PFD with harness attachment points, strobe light for your life jacket, whistle attached to your PFD. Also, a good headlamp with red light mode for night vision. These are essential sailing gear items that could save your life. Don't wait until you need them to realize you should have bought them.
Thanks for the essential sailing gear suggestions! What about tools and repair items? Are there specific essential sailing gear items for fixing things on the go? I'm thinking along the lines of what might break during a sail and needs immediate attention.
