Hey everyone, I'm planning a coastal cruise this summer and want to make sure I have all the essential gear. What are the absolute must have boat equipment items you wouldn't leave the dock without? I'm talking about safety gear, navigation tools, and anything else that's critical for coastal cruising. I've got the basics like life jackets and fire extinguishers, but what else should be on my checklist?
For coastal cruising, there are some must have boat equipment items I never leave without. Beyond the obvious safety gear, a good VHF radio with DSC is absolutely essential. Also, a proper EPIRB or PLB - don't cheap out on this. I'd add a handheld GPS as backup to your main system, and a good set of binoculars with compass. Don't forget a proper first aid kit that's actually marine specific, not just a basic drugstore one.
I teach boating safety courses and always emphasize that must have boat equipment goes beyond what's legally required. A man overboard kit is critical - throwable device, whistle, strobe light. Also, a proper anchor with adequate rode for your area. Many people underestimate how much scope they need. And please, test your bilge pump regularly and have a backup manual pump. I've seen too many situations where the electric pump failed.
From an electronics perspective, having redundant navigation systems is part of must have boat equipment. If your main chartplotter fails, you need backup. A tablet with marine charts and GPS is cheap insurance. Also, consider AIS transceiver if you're in busy waters - lets other boats see you. And solar charger for keeping devices powered. Modern must have boat equipment definitely includes power management solutions.
