I do monthly fluid level checks DIY but I'm sure I'm overlooking something. Beyond oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer - what other fluids should I be checking regularly? Any tips for doing these checks properly? I always struggle with the transmission dipstick on my car.
Fluid level checks DIY should include: engine oil (check warm, 5 minutes after shutdown), coolant (cold engine only), brake fluid (check reservoir), power steering, windshield washer, transmission (if dipstick equipped - check warm in park on level ground), differential/transfer case (if equipped). Also check for leaks under car regularly.
Transmission dipsticks can be tricky: some require checking with engine running in park, some warm, some cold. Check your manual. Also, fluid should be clean and red (for ATF), not brown or burnt smelling. If it's dark or smells burnt, consider a fluid change. Many modern cars have lifetime" fluid but it still degrades over time.
Don't forget about clutch fluid (if manual transmission) and differential fluid (on trucks/SUVs/RWD cars). These are often overlooked in basic car maintenance tips. Also, check for fluid contamination: coolant shouldn't have oil in it, oil shouldn't have coolant in it (milky appearance). Cross-contamination indicates serious problems.
