Need to replace a burnt out headlight bulb. Headlight bulb replacement DIY seems straightforward but I've heard some cars are really difficult to access. Any tips or tools that make the job easier? Should I replace both bulbs even if only one is out?
Headlight bulb replacement DIY varies wildly by car. Some are 5-minute jobs, some require removing the bumper. Check your owner's manual or forum first. Tips: don't touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (oil causes hot spots), use dielectric grease on connectors to prevent corrosion, and yes, replace both bulbs so light output matches.
My car requires removing the battery to access one headlight bulb. Super annoying. Tools that help: trim removal tools (plastic pry bars), magnetic pickup tool (for dropped bolts), and a good flashlight. Also, consider upgrading to brighter bulbs while you're in there - but check local laws about brightness limits.
If you have HID or LED bulbs, they're usually more expensive but last longer. Don't buy the cheapest bulbs - they often burn out quickly. For difficult access, sometimes you can reach through the wheel well liner instead of removing the whole headlight assembly. Check forum posts for your specific model.
