Living in a snowy area means constant battle with rust. What rust prevention DIY techniques have worked best for you? I'm looking for practical seasonal car care tips specifically for winter months. What products or methods give the best protection without costing a fortune?
Rust prevention DIY that works: regular washing, especially underside in winter (salt is the enemy), touch-up paint for chips, fluid film or woolwax undercoating (NOT rubberized undercoating - it traps moisture), keeping drain holes clear. For seasonal car care tips in rust areas: wash weekly in winter, apply rust inhibitor in fall.
I use fluid film every fall on my truck's frame and underside. It's messy but works. Also, check door bottoms, wheel wells, and rocker panels regularly - these are rust hotspots. If you see surface rust, sand it immediately and apply primer/paint. Prevention is much easier than repair when it comes to rust.
For seasonal car care tips in snowy areas: get mud flaps to protect rocker panels, use rubber floor mats to prevent salt water soaking carpet, and consider getting a car wash membership for winter. The undercarriage wash is worth it. Also, wax your car before winter - the wax layer protects paint from salt and road grime.
