I want to start doing proper car detailing at home instead of going to the car wash. What are your favorite interior cleaning DIY methods and exterior car wash tips? I'm especially interested in products that give professional results without breaking the bank. Any tips for engine cleaning DIY too?
For car detailing at home, start with the two-bucket method: one for soapy water, one for rinsing your wash mitt. This prevents scratching. Microfiber towels are essential - cheap ones can scratch paint. For interior cleaning DIY, a good vacuum, brush attachments, and all-purpose cleaner work wonders. Don't use armor all on dashboards - it creates that awful shiny, sticky film.
Exterior car wash tips: wash in shade, not direct sunlight. Sun dries soap too quickly and causes water spots. Use a dedicated car wash soap, not dish detergent - dish soap strips wax. For engine cleaning DIY, cover sensitive components (alternator, intake, electronics) with plastic bags first. Use degreaser and a soft brush, rinse gently.
For interior cleaning DIY, a steam cleaner is a game changer for seats and carpets. You can get a decent one for $100. Also, leather conditioner for leather seats - prevents cracking. For exterior, clay bar treatment once or twice a year makes the paint feel like glass and helps wax adhere better.
