My mechanic quoted me $400 for front brake pads and rotors. I'm considering trying brake pad replacement DIY but I'm worried about safety. Has anyone here done their own brake work as a beginner? What special tools would I need, and how difficult is it really? I'm comfortable with basic car maintenance tips level stuff but brakes seem intimidating.
Brake pad replacement DIY is absolutely doable for a novice with proper preparation. Safety first: always use jack stands, never just a jack. You'll need a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the pistons, plus basic sockets. Watch several tutorials for your specific car - some have tricky caliper bolts or require special tools.
I did my first brake pad replacement DIY last year after watching hours of tutorials. The hardest part was getting the caliper bolts loose - they were really tight. A breaker bar helped. Also, remember to pump the brake pedal a few times before driving to seat the pads against the rotors. Take your time and double-check everything.
One tip for brake pad replacement DIY: buy quality parts. Cheap brake pads can squeal and wear quickly. Also, consider replacing the rotors if they're worn or scored - it's not much more work once you have everything apart. For tools, a torque wrench is important for caliper bolts - over-tightening can strip threads.
