I want to start doing my own oil changes but I'm nervous about messing it up. Does anyone have a solid DIY oil change guide they recommend? I've watched some YouTube videos but they all seem to skip important steps. What tools do I absolutely need for a basic oil change, and what are common mistakes to avoid?
For a good DIY oil change guide, I recommend starting with your car's specific forum. Most makes have enthusiast forums with detailed photo guides. Essential tools: oil filter wrench (get the right size for your filter), drain pan, funnel, and ramps or jack stands. NEVER work under a car supported only by a jack - that's how people get killed.
Common mistakes with DIY oil change guide attempts: over-tightening the drain plug (strip the threads), forgetting to replace the crush washer (leaks), putting the wrong oil in, or not priming the new filter. Also, make sure you know whether your filter is top-mounted or bottom-mounted - they require different approaches.
Invest in a Fumoto valve if you do your own oil changes regularly. It replaces the drain plug with a quick-release valve - no more messing with hot drain plugs. Best $25 I ever spent for DIY auto maintenance. Also, get oil absorbent pads for your drip pan - makes cleanup much easier.
