Full Version: What are the best beginner 3D modeling tools for someone just starting out?

Hey everyone, I'm completely new to 3D modeling and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there. I've heard about Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, but they all seem so complex. What are some good beginner 3D modeling tools that won't break the bank? I'm looking for something with a gentle learning curve but still powerful enough to grow with as I learn more. Any recommendations for someone taking their first steps into 3D design?
Honestly, Blender is probably your best bet for beginner 3D modeling tools. It's completely free, has a massive community, and there are endless tutorials available. The learning curve can be steep at first, but once you get past the initial hump, it's incredibly powerful. I started with it about three years ago and haven't looked back. The 2.8 update really improved the interface for beginners too.
If you want something even simpler than Blender, check out Tinkercad. It's browser based and super intuitive for absolute beginners. It's great for learning basic 3D concepts without getting overwhelmed. Once you're comfortable with that, you can move to more advanced tools. For organic modeling, Sculptris is another free option that's very beginner friendly, though it's not being actively developed anymore.
I'd recommend starting with Fusion 360 if you're interested in more technical or mechanical modeling. They have a free personal use license that's perfect for beginners. The parametric modeling approach is different from Blender's mesh modeling, but it's really useful for precise work. Plus, it integrates well with 3D printing if that's something you might get into later.
For architectural work, SketchUp Free is surprisingly capable for beginners. The interface is intuitive and there are tons of extensions available. It won't do everything the paid version does, but it's more than enough to learn the basics of 3D modeling for buildings and interiors. The learning curve is much gentler than Blender for architectural visualization.
As a student, I've been using Blender for all my game asset creation. The fact that it's completely free means I can use it for both personal and school projects without worrying about licenses. The game engine integration isn't great anymore, but for pure modeling, texturing, and animation, it's fantastic. There's also a ton of free 3D modeling tutorials specifically for Blender on YouTube.
