I've been seeing all these beautiful DIY macrame projects online and I really want to try making some wall hangings and plant hangers. The problem is I've never done any kind of knotting before. What are the absolute basics I need to get started? What materials should I buy first? Are there specific DIY macrame projects that are easier for beginners? I'd appreciate any tips or resources you can share.
For DIY macrame projects, start with a simple plant hanger. You only need to learn two basic knots: the square knot and the half hitch. Get some 4mm or 5mm cotton cord from a craft store - it doesn't have to be expensive. Watch a few YouTube tutorials and practice the knots before starting your actual project.
I started with wall hangings for my DIY macrame projects. They're forgiving because small mistakes aren't as noticeable. Get a wooden dowel or branch to hang it from. Start with a simple pattern using just square knots in rows. The repetition helps you get comfortable with the technique before moving to more complex DIY macrame projects.
Don't buy expensive macrame cord right away. You can practice with cheap cotton clothesline from the hardware store. It's thicker and easier to work with when you're learning. For your first real DIY macrame projects, invest in proper cord once you're comfortable with the basic knots.
Get a macrame board or make your own with cork and pins. It helps keep your tension even while you work on DIY macrame projects. Also, measure and cut your cords longer than you think you need - you can always trim excess but you can't add length back! Most beginners underestimate how much cord they need.
Start with small DIY macrame projects like keychains or bookmarks. They use less material so if you make mistakes, it's not as frustrating. They also make great gifts! Once you master the basic knots on small projects, you'll have the confidence to tackle larger DIY macrame projects like wall hangings.
