I'm working on a novel and struggling with character development advice. My characters feel flat and I'm not sure how to make them more three-dimensional. I've heard about character interviews and backstories, but what specific character development advice has actually helped you create memorable characters? Also, how do you balance character development with plot structure tips?
For character development advice, I love the character wants vs needs" framework. What does your character think they want (external goal) versus what they actually need (internal growth)? This creates tension and arc. Also, give characters contradictory traits - a brave person who's afraid of spiders, a generous person who hoards one specific thing. Contradictions feel human.
Pay attention to how characters speak. Dialogue writing tips often focus on what's said, but how it's said matters too. Word choice, sentence length, formality level - these should vary by character. A professor speaks differently than a teenager. Also, what characters don't say can be as revealing as what they do say. Subtext is powerful character development advice.
Think about how characters interact with their environment. What objects do they cherish? How do they arrange their space? What do they notice that others don't? These description techniques reveal personality without exposition. A character who notices dust motes in sunlight is different from one who only sees stains on the carpet. Their perception shapes how readers perceive them.
Put characters in situations that test their values. The real character development advice is that people reveal themselves under pressure. How does your character react when tired, scared, angry, or surprised? Do they stay consistent or surprise themselves? Also, consider how secondary characters view your main character - their perspectives add dimensionality.
Remember that characters should change throughout the story. That's the character arc. Map out how they start, what challenges change them, and how they end. This needs to work with your plot structure tips - the external events should catalyze internal growth. Also, minor characters should have their own mini-arcs or at least the illusion of lives beyond the page.
