Full Version: How do you set and enforce boundaries with demanding clients?

I've been struggling with a particularly demanding client who expects responses at all hours and constant revisions without additional payment. I know I need better freelancer boundary setting skills, but I'm worried about losing the client. How do you establish clear boundaries from the start, and what's your approach to client boundary enforcement when those boundaries are tested? Any tips for handling demanding clients specifically?
For freelancer boundary setting, I'm very clear about my working hours in my email signature and website. I typically respond to emails within 24 hours during business days." When clients test those boundaries, I gently remind them. "I received your email after hours and will address this first thing tomorrow morning." Consistency is key for client boundary enforcement.
I charge more for rush work and make this clear upfront. When handling demanding clients who want everything yesterday, I explain my standard timeline and offer the rush option at a higher rate. This sets a boundary while still providing a solution. Most clients choose to wait, and those who don't pay appropriately for the urgency.
I have a boundaries document" that I share during onboarding. It covers communication preferences, revision limits, payment terms, and what constitutes additional work. When boundaries are tested, I refer back to this document. It's easier to enforce boundaries when they're written down and agreed upon from the start.
For constant revisions without payment, I implemented a change request process. Any change outside the original scope requires a written change request with estimated additional cost and timeline impact. Clients sign off on this before I proceed. This has virtually eliminated the just one more small thing" problem.
I learned the hard way that some clients will take advantage if you let them. Now I have a three-strike rule for boundary violations. First time: gentle reminder. Second time: firmer reminder referencing our agreement. Third time: discussion about whether we should continue working together. This gives clients a chance to adjust while protecting my time and energy.
