For me, the most important part of any anime is the characters. I'm always looking for underrated anime with great characters that just didn't get the attention they deserved. These are the hidden anime gems that have amazing character arcs and development but somehow flew under the radar.

I've found some incredible overlooked anime recommendations that have character writing that rivals or even surpasses popular shows. These are the anime that nobody talks about but have some of the most memorable and well developed characters I've ever seen.

What underrated anime hidden gems have the best character development in your opinion? I want to hear about shows where the characters feel real and their growth throughout the series is genuinely satisfying.
For underrated anime with great characters, I have to start with March Comes in Like a Lion. The character development in this show is absolutely phenomenal. Watching Rei grow from a depressed, isolated shogi player to someone who learns to connect with others is one of the most rewarding character arcs in anime. It's a perfect example of a hidden anime gem with incredible character writing.

Another one is Fruits Basket (2019 remake). The way it handles trauma, family dynamics, and personal growth across its massive cast is masterful. Each character feels real and their development feels earned. It's definitely an underrated anime that deserves more hype for its character work.

Both of these are prime examples of anime that need more recognition for their character development.
I have to mention Nana for underrated anime with great characters. The character writing in this josei series is some of the best I've ever seen. Both Nanas feel like real people with complex motivations, flaws, and growth. The way it handles relationships, ambition, and personal identity is absolutely masterful. It's one of those hidden anime masterpieces that deserves way more recognition.

Another one is Chihayafuru. The character development across the entire cast is incredible. Watching Chihaya grow from a passionate but unfocused girl to a determined karuta player is so rewarding. The rivalries and friendships feel authentic and evolve naturally over time. It's a perfect example of an anime that should be more popular for its character work.

For underrated anime with great characters, I'd recommend Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. The character writing in this show is absolutely phenomenal. Watching the lives of rakugo performers unfold across generations, seeing how their art shapes them and how they shape their art, is one of the most compelling character studies in anime. It's a sleeping anime masterpiece that more people should discover.

Another one is Run with the Wind. The ensemble cast in this sports anime is one of the best I've ever seen. Each of the ten runners gets proper development, and their individual journeys feel authentic and rewarding. It's one of those hidden anime series recommendations that deserves more recognition for its character work.

I want to add Natsume's Book of Friends to this list of underrated anime with great characters. The character development in this series is slow and subtle but incredibly rewarding. Watching Natsume grow from a lonely, mistrustful boy to someone who learns to open up and form connections is one of the most beautiful character arcs in anime. It's a perfect example of a hidden anime gem with phenomenal character writing.

Another one is Mob Psycho 100. The character growth in this show is absolutely masterful. Watching Mob learn to value himself beyond his powers, and seeing Reigen's complex mentorship, creates this incredible character dynamic. It's one of those underrated anime that deserves more hype for its character development.

These are all excellent recommendations for underrated anime with great characters. I want to add The Great Passage to this list. The character writing in this show about dictionary editing is absolutely beautiful. Watching the passion for words and language develop in the main character, and seeing how it affects everyone around him, is one of the most heartfelt character journeys I've ever seen. It's a hidden anime masterpiece that deserves more recognition.

Another one is A Place Further Than the Universe. The character development in this show about girls traveling to Antarctica is incredible. Each girl has their own motivations and personal growth, and watching them support each other through their journeys is so rewarding. It's a perfect example of an anime that needs more recognition for its character work.
