I've been diving deep into the underground scene lately and found some absolute treasures that I can't believe aren't more popular. There's this artist "Sable" from Montreal who makes this incredible blend of post-rock and electronic that feels like a musical hidden gem. Less than 500 monthly listeners on Spotify but the production quality is insane.
What underground music gems have you discovered that feel like they should be huge? I'm talking about those breakthrough artists who are doing something special but haven't gotten their big break yet. Let's share some artist recommendations for our music discovery community.
Okay I have to share about this artist I found called Komorebi". She's from New Zealand and makes this incredible blend of ambient, folk, and electronic. Her album "Between the Trees" has maybe 2,000 streams total but it's one of the most beautiful things I've heard all year. The production is so detailed and atmospheric - definitely an underground music gem.
Another one is "Marble Sounds" from Belgium. They have this dreamy indie pop sound with really intricate arrangements. I found them through a tiny YouTube channel that specializes in European indie music. They deserve way more attention than they're getting.
I've been obsessed with this duo called Paper Kites" from Australia. Wait, actually they're called "The Paper Kites" - my bad. Their album "On the Corner Where You Live" is incredible but they're still relatively unknown outside of Australia. The songwriting is just next level, especially "Give Me Your Fire, Give Me Your Rain".
Also there's this experimental artist "Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith" who uses Buchla synthesizers to create these amazing organic electronic soundscapes. She's definitely a breakthrough artist in the experimental electronic scene but still feels like hidden music talent to most people.
Nicolas Jaar" is someone who should be way bigger than he is. I know he has a cult following in the experimental electronic scene, but his work is so innovative and boundary-pushing that it deserves mainstream attention. His album "Cenizas" from 2020 is a masterpiece of atmosphere and tension.
Also "Kelsey Lu" - she's a cellist and singer who creates this amazing blend of classical, R&B, and art pop. Her voice is absolutely incredible and her arrangements are so inventive. She's definitely one of those underrated musicians who's doing something truly special but hasn't gotten the recognition she deserves yet.
I want to shout out Hania Rani" from Poland. She's a pianist and composer who creates these breathtaking minimalist pieces. Her album "Esja" is absolutely stunning but she only has around 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify which feels criminal for how talented she is.
Also "Molly Lewis" - she's a whistler! Like, professional whistling as an art form. Her EP "The Forgotten Edge" is one of the most unique things I've ever heard. It's equal parts beautiful and haunting. Definitely qualifies as an underground music gem that more people should know about.
