I've been thinking about this a lot lately. There are so many TV shows with rave reviews that people absolutely adore, but I just don't understand the hype. For me, one of the biggest examples is Stranger Things. Everyone talks about it like it's the best thing ever, but I watched the first season and found it kind of... meh. The nostalgia factor feels forced, and the pacing drags in places.
What about you all? What overrated TV shows do you think get way more praise than they deserve? I'm talking about those TV shows everyone recommends but I hate type situations.
For me, it's not just about not liking something - it's about shows that have such a massive cultural footprint that you feel almost obligated to enjoy them. The pressure to like these popular entertainment phenomena can be overwhelming sometimes.
Oh man, I'm right there with you on Stranger Things. The first season was decent enough, but by season 3 it felt like they were just milking the nostalgia without adding anything new. The characters stopped developing, and the plot became repetitive.
For me, the most overrated TV series has to be Game of Thrones. Yes, the production values were amazing, and yes, the first few seasons were compelling. But the last two seasons? Absolute trainwreck. The character arcs were abandoned, the pacing was all over the place, and that ending... don't even get me started.
Yet people still talk about it like it's the greatest thing ever made. I think sometimes when something becomes a cultural phenomenon, people feel pressure to like it even when the quality drops.
I have to add The Office to this list. I know, I know - everyone loves it. But I've tried multiple times to get into it, and the cringe humor just makes me uncomfortable. I don't find Michael Scott funny at all, just painfully awkward.
What's interesting is how these shows become part of our cultural vocabulary. People quote The Office constantly, and if you don't get the references, you feel left out. But I'd rather be left out than force myself to watch something I don't enjoy.
The same goes for Friends. It was huge when it aired, and now with the reunion special, everyone's nostalgic for it. But watching it now, the jokes feel dated and the characters are kind of terrible people. Yet it's treated like this timeless classic.
Breaking Bad. There, I said it. I watched the entire series because everyone insisted it was the best television ever made. And yeah, it's well-acted and well-written, but I never connected with it emotionally. Walter White's transformation from sympathetic to monstrous just didn't resonate with me the way it seems to have with everyone else.
Sometimes I wonder if the hype itself ruins the experience. When something is built up as the greatest show of all time," your expectations are so high that almost nothing could meet them.
The same thing happened with The Wire. Critically acclaimed, everyone says it's brilliant social commentary... and I found it slow and difficult to follow. Maybe I'm just not smart enough for it, but I shouldn't have to work that hard to enjoy a TV show.
For me it's The Mandalorian. As a Star Wars fan, I was excited when it first came out. Baby Yoda was cute, the production values were great... but the episodic structure felt repetitive after a while. Each episode: Mando goes to a planet, has an adventure, helps someone, moves on. Rinse and repeat.
Yet people treat it like it's revolutionizing television. I think the bar for Star Wars content was just so low after the sequel trilogy that anything decent feels amazing by comparison.
Also, Ted Lasso. Don't get me wrong - it's a nice, feel-good show. But nice" doesn't equal "groundbreaking television." The relentless positivity started to feel forced after a while, and the character development was pretty predictable. Yet it swept the awards shows and everyone acts like it's this profound meditation on kindness.
I actually agree with a lot of these, but I want to play devil's advocate for a moment. Sometimes when we call something overrated," what we're really saying is "this isn't for me." And that's okay! Not everything has to be for everyone.
That said, I'll add my own controversial pick: The Crown. Beautiful production, great acting... but so dry. It feels like watching a beautifully shot history textbook. I appreciate the craft that goes into it, but I don't enjoy watching it.
The interesting thing about overhyped TV series is that they often become cultural touchstones whether we like them or not. We end up having opinions about them even if we don't watch them, just because they're so omnipresent in the cultural conversation.
