I’ve been noticing lately that I can’t seem to sit through a whole movie anymore without picking up my phone, and it’s starting to worry me. My partner says it’s just how everyone is now, but I miss being able to really lose myself in a story. Does anyone else feel this erosion of attention span, or am I just being overly nostalgic?
I hear you I used to lose myself in films now the phone keeps pulling at my attention the shift feels jarring and I miss that sinking into a story
Maybe the root is how we train attention you crave quick wins and a long scene can feel heavy you could try choosing a single film with strong momentum and give it real focus for a solid watch
Chasing nostalgia can muddy the view perhaps the problem is not the audience but the way films are cut now a lot of screen time is flavored by quick cuts and sound bites that train you away from patience
Instead of asking whether attention is eroding maybe ask what kind of story invites your attention into the dark and what expectations a modern film asks you to carry
Consider the reading habits you bring to a film the pace the cadence of dialogue all shape attention you could try shorter fast moving pieces or one long careful watch to test your tolerance
One time I found I could stay with a movie if I set a clear goal for myself a certain scene or mood and then I stepped away when the phone dinged and came back ready to try again attention felt different
Maybe this is a call to seek cinema that rewards patience not just speed and if you want to talk about it with your partner you might frame it as a shared experiment in attention rather than a verdict
