I’ve been working on a digital painting for weeks, trying to get this one character’s expression just right, but I keep hitting a wall. No matter how many layers I tweak, it just feels flat and disconnected from the rest of the piece. Has anyone else ever spent way too long stuck on a single detail like this, and how did you finally move past it?
Yep I have spent days stuck on one glance and felt it in my shoulders I put the piece away for a bit and worked on something else then came back with a fresher mood to guide the expression
Try a quick value pass first to check depth then bring color back to support the expression and mood
I think you might be chasing a moment from a photo instead of letting the character lead the pose and the surroundings speak for it
It can be tempting to believe there is a single trick that fixes it yet you may just swap one tension for another as you tweak
Reframe the problem by paying attention to the overall rhythm of the silhouette and the light the expression can ride on that flow
I like to switch brush modes and redraw the same area a few times then choose the version that feels loosened and more alive
Do you think the frame and the story around the image can lift the expression even if the face feels off on its own?
